I prepared this volume for those that cast a critical gaze on the surrounding world. The following texts are accompanied by a reevaluation of the scenographer\u2019s responsibilities, beyond the success of the dramatic performance and towards the extended field of scenographic curatorship. Somewhere between the painters\u2019 freedom to imagine the frame of their paintings and the architects\u2019 duty to integrate the reality of the neighborhood in the conception of a new space, the scenographers can exhibit the show outside of the theatrical performance <\/span>per se<\/span><\/i>, in accordance with the nature of today\u2019s communication media. The Prague Quadriennale is one of those media.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The semantic experiments within the Prague Quadriennale related to the term <\/span>scenography <\/span><\/i>have been researched here in order to bring nuance to the scenographer\u2019s role in various evolving socio-cultural contexts. Starting from these clarifications and without claiming to bring an exhaustive conceptual exegesis, <\/span>The Exposed Spectacle <\/span><\/i>puts forward a scenographic perspective on reality for those who are interested in the way the act of going to the theater may impact our present situation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The succession of settings within the exhibition of the show, from the spaces of the city of Prague to the historical buildings which host the scenographic pavilions, is duplicated by a curatorial, decisional succession, elaborated in connection with each edition\u2019s theme. Thus, one reaches a telescopic understanding of the exhibited information, which is accessed through gradual perceptual and cognitive accumulations. The transition from architectural space to showpiece happens through exhibition scenography.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The exhibition setting delivers information as well, through scale, texture and symbolism, through sound and lighting, underlining the qualities of the content it encloses. The frame of a sketch, the pedestal of a model, the backdrop or the structure of a pavilion can emphasize a certain concept of the theater performance they were created for, adding a useful layer of information. The scenography pavilion gradually transforms from exhibition stand into research interface. The creation of a connection between the theater show on display and its exhibition environment thus becomes an aspect of the scenographer\u2019s job and therefore a theatrical ability.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
