Infinite Cinema. Transmedia Universe Introduction

This book takes on the difficult task of clearing a complex terrain that is not so much unexplored (at least not in Western specialized literature) as unexplorable, due to its constant reinvention and reshaping: the transmediatic. The readers quickly realize that they are in the presence of a dual endeavor. On the one hand, the author aims to introduce them to the dizzying variety of transmedia practices which, regardless of the rhetoric of innovation that would like to present them as pure emanations of the contemporary age, have a long history, especially in the field of cinema, which is of particular interest to Mischie. Despite the relatively short life of the concept of transmedia, developed systematically only since the late 1990s-early 2000s, the author traces its long line of ancestors in the chapter entitled "Sources of the Transmedia Universe", and then gives a broad overview of the various existing types of transmedia works, from the most well-known, whether vernacular or institutionalized (such as VR and AR installations, VoD and social media platforms or museum initiatives), to the more obscure (real-virtual portals, alternate reality games, mixed reality, etc.) On the other hand, Mischie also seeks to promote a practice whose main representative she is in Romania, illustrating the sub-chapter "Transmedia universe in Romanian context" with a selection of her own projects. Moreover, she also wants to contribute to the theorization of transmedia by drawing on experiences gained through actual practice, as when she talks about its social impact and the ethical complexities raised by the new methods and platforms associated with it. The last chapter, entitled "Transmedia futurology: transfuturism" is perhaps the most exciting of the book. It is shaped as a speculation on the various directions in which the artistic mobilization of transmedia might develop, showing an acute sensitivity to burning civilisational issues such as the planetary crisis or the need for the human species to reposition itself in relation to the technologies it has created.
