Romanian Mythology Through Drama Games

The book written by Magda Jianu, Romina Boldașu, Andreea Jicman and Andrei Anghel – all involved in various activities of theater pedagogy at university level – presents itself as having a double function. On the one hand, it aims to draw up an inventory of the most important figures of Romanian popular mythology, dividing them according to either their presence in written fairy tales or their free circulation in folklore, especially in connection with certain celebrations or of everyday rural life activities. The presentation of each character, from the best-known ones such as “Muma Pădurii” (the Forest Hag) to the more obscure ones such as the “pricolici” or “tricolici” (two kinds of zoomorphic spirits), includes of an etymological incursion, speculations about their possible origins and a description of the characteristics attributed to them in various regions, periods and contexts - with a particular emphasis on highlighting what the authors call the "bipolar manifestation" of many of these mythological figures, which embody both positive and negative values. On the other hand, the book is also intended to be a practical manual that proposes various games aimed at different age groups, designed to make children assimilate knowledge about Romanian folklore in an accessible and playful manner. The authors demonstrate a keen pedagogical sense when they recommend games that involve updating mythological figures, by adapting them to familiar situations such as going shopping or taking public transport, rather than forcibly keeping them in a historical time and a rural space to which children might feel alien. Other activities focus on raising pupils' awareness of their environment, of the fauna and flora from which many of the mythological figures in the book stem. All this demonstrates the finesse of the authors' teaching approach and the intelligence of their efforts to preserve a fragile intangible cultural heritage, which must be regularly recorded in books such as this one, but also subtly integrated into the consciousness of the new generations in order to be kept alive.
