Thomas Ciocșirescu

Speaking Course for Actors and Trainers

Thomas Ciocșirescu's book presents itself from the outset as a tool that cannot be used without an organized framework in which to carry out the recommended speaking exercises; however, it is also intended to at least partially deepen the theoretical, linguistic, psychological and biological aspects that underlie the act of speaking - aspects that will then feed the applied part of the course. Unlike other defenders of Romanian culture, Clocșirescu does not anachronistically sacralize outdated traditions that are impossible to maintain today; instead, he expresses a strong attachment to the living, spoken language, to the correct and clear pronunciation of which he wishes to contribute (the book actually ends with a "Plea for the spoken language").

Clocșirescu's course is structured as an unpacking of the various elements that make up speech, starting from psycho-social motivations, going through the cultural and historical characteristics of spoken language and reaching the bodily mechanisms that make it possible. The latter are explored in detail, with descriptions of how posture, breathing and voice each affect the clarity of speech, and exercises to improve or strengthen them are presented. The last and most extensive chapter of the course is itself made up of exercises segmented according to the sounds or groups of sounds they are aimed at, progressing gradually from pronouncing them individually to incorporating them into words, and then uttering whole sentences.

Speech Course for Actors and Trainers openly states its intention to be used in training programmes for amateur or professional actors, and its brevity and clarity really recommend it for this purpose.
