This volume by Associate Professor Mihaela Bețiu, PhD, offers a systematic analysis of three fundamental moments in the history of acting pedagogy: Andrea Perrucci’s treatise (1699), the first coherent body of principles of modern acting; K. S. Stanislavski’s psychological system, which redefined the relationship between actor, character, and scenic truth; and Viola Spolin’s method, through which improvisation is elevated to the status of a creative norm. Starting from the tension between rule and deviation as a driving force of stage art, the author identifies and examines the norms, rules, and working tools proposed by each of these three systems, providing a rigorous synthesis that is valuable both to researchers and to practitioners and teachers of the actor’s art.
