Translated from Romanian by Ana Popovici
Bogdana Darie’s course proposes a method based on improvisation as a means of rediscovering authentic presence and spontaneity on stage. The author advocates a theatre of truth and organic involvement, in which the actor does not imitate but lives the dramatic situations, consciously drawing on their own psychophysical resources.
The first part of the book examines the actor’s training process by defining the essential components of their art: attention, concentration, imagination, empathy, memory, spontaneity, and the ability to respond authentically. The second part focuses on the actor’s assumption of the stage situation: exploring the given circumstances, the relationship with the partner, and the dynamics of action, while practising the psychological gesture and the convergence between inner motivations and stage behaviour. The proposed exercises are followed by analyses of the working process, meant to identify expressive mechanisms and possible blockages, so that improvisation becomes a concrete means of learning, analysis, and artistic refinement.
